The smaller cycle parts were all stripped and sprayed gloss black,
the only really damaged part was the battery tray which had a split
all the way across.
I had nothing to loose so I decided to have a go at plastic welding
the two halves together, using a large soldering iron the job
proved quite easy once you get the temperature right.
As I found the charging system to be faulty during my original
assessment of the bike I checked each of it's components in turn.
again using the procedure in the Haynes manual the regulator / rectifier
proved to be ok.
The next item on the list was the repair of the leaking petrol tank,
because the tank had so many small holes along the bottom it wasn't
practical to attempt a welded repair so I decided to try a resin repair kit.
Now I know of quite a few people who've tried these kits with no success,
even the shop keeper who sold it me warned me of possible failure.
I paid particular attention to cleaning the tank, first using a
solution of hydrochloric acid followed by a wash with acetone.
This provided a good base for the resin mix. When the resin had cured
I pressure tested the tank with compressed air and it proved to be ok.
Next job the engine.
