Hello,
I live in France and I bought a 550 CBX 4 mounth ago.
It seems to be a real pleasure when it works well.
Indeed, because of the fork, the exaust system and the brake, I had to repair it .
It tried it last week, and i didn't find the best pressure for my fork and for the rear suspension.
I tried 1.2 and 3.5 kg/cm3 first (highest pressure)and at 120km/h the cbx woobles dangerously. I tried 0.8 and 1.0 kg/cm3 (lowest pressure), it's better but the fork seems to jump on the bumps of the road (in curve it's dangerous ).
My rear tire is used. I will change it.
I didn't try the motor over 7000 I should adjust the gap to the valves and resove the wooble problem first
I'm very impatient.

I have had my cbx550 since 1986.
It has done 210,000 km.
Had the usual problems. Cam chain (3 timex) and tensioner(twice) replaced.
Front fork seals are also a problem . Have had these replaced at least four times.
As for front end wobbles as decribed by other users . I tried various tyres . Michelin,Pireli, bridgestone, dunlop
At present I am using a continental super twin on front an bridgestone on rear. The type of tyre on front is very important, I believe. Use original size that came with bike and block type tread(this is what super twin is).
Many of the newer tyres are just not suited for this bike- remember it is over 15 years old.
Front disc pads -stick to Honda original- they are dear but last well. The ones currently on mine have done 90,000 km and still only half worn.
Exhaust pipes- I still have 4 into 2, but with differnt mufferlers- I suggest staying with these rather than 4 into 1. Remember the designers made the arrangement for a reason !
key barrel is ruined - as mentioned by some one else- too many keys with ignition key.
Oil and oil filter changes.
I change oil every 3000 k and filter every 6000k as stated in owners manual.
I use castrol gtx seems to do the job.
There is now a rattling noise down bottom of engine at 2500 revs, similar to cam chain noise.
Any one any ideas ?
Used to come and go but now seems more constant.
In all having bike regulary maintained seems to have helped me reach 210,000km on it.
It is white version ,with blues stripes.
I get about 20,000km out of a heavy duty chain.
I often lube it with engine oil (new) and let sit overnight so oil can penetrate links. Also use lube in cans- castrol.

Any comments ?
I am finding it hard to find a replacement bike

Hello!

My name is Matjaz and I'm from Slovenia. I own an Honda CBX 550 F but it has an 400 ccm engine. Now it hasen't been running for a year and a half due to engine malfunction. When i opened the engine I've discovered the real catastrophy. Obviously the cranck rod had broken because the bolts that are holding the rod to the main shaft were loosened. This caused an excesive distance between slide bearing and main shaft sliding surface which created vibrations. Because of this vibrations the rod had broken. I've realized that I have to replace the main shaft because the sliding surface is damaged and the shaft was bended due overheating of the bearing ( the shaft is localy blue; this indicates that it was heated over 500庵), cranck rod, piston, cillinder and clutch ( it was dammaged by the shattered cranck rod and bearing couls ).
I wonder if there is anybody who can help me find or has the parts or the entire engine for my motorcycle. It can be an 400 or 550 ccm.

Thanks! Matjaz

Dear Colleagues,

I'm happy to introduce my self to you, I'm Irman from Jakarta Indonesia. I have an engine with the following no. NC07E (I don't know when it's produced). When I found a picture of that bike in internet, it is CBR400R but when I searched by using the engine no it is CBX400F. Looking at both CBR400R and CBX400F pictures, I found a diference thing. It is 'REV' code at the top of the engine cylinder head which I could not find at CBX400F. Now, that engine has been reinstalled again. It is running well.

Any body knows about this engine? Pls share. Your comment, information and whatever is really appreciated.

Thank you, Irman

Hi there mathias
When i bought my 550f it had that "marble rattling around in a tin can sound".From the info out there it seemed to be a timing tensioner problem ( GOOFY DESIGN ).AT 36,000 k I choose to clean up the shaft that the tensioner pivots on and replace the chain ,i couldn't find a open link design so i borrowed a Chain Splitter. The old chain was 1/4 in.longer than the new one,Seems ok now.I'm not shure how many KM's i have put on the bike 1 year latter ( i have some spedometer noise that i have been chasing )but next time i think i might try some of the mods that can be found at this site and though other links.
hope this helps.

well... there is a CBX to be bought but there is a strange noise coming from the front of the engine especially when it is hot. there is also need of adjusting the valve clearances which i used to do myself to all my bikes /vt500e and older 4 strokers/ i am not a richie sp i would not like to spend money on the service at a shop especially that they are s*** here in Poland and are most prone to spoil your bike and your budget as well. is there an advice to do it by yourself? what about the rattling noise? is camchain relacement inevitable? could somebody answer?

thanks in advanve

Hello out there my 1981 CBX550 has a "rattle". I thought it was the dreaded cam cahain tensioner problem but on inspecting the tensioner all seems well.
has any body had problems with the Primary chain and what sort of "rattle" does that make.
I have a copy of the May 1988 MotorCycle international. the article on CBX550's makse mention fo Tony Galea doing a mod on the tensioner. is he still around and what was this secret mod?

thanks

Hi Pop,

Just finished renovating the front end (forks and brakes) so I'm quite up to speed on your question.

The Haynes manual recommends using Automatic Transmission Fluid - not fork oil. The fork leg should be filled to 152mm from the top with ATF - with both springs removed. If the leg has been drained it must be pumped several times when the leg is almost full (to within 152 mm) to expel all the air. Re-assemble and re-pressurize the legs to 11-15 PSI.

By the way - I found filling the legs quite easy. Use a BBQ skewer or similar with 152mm marked on it and a torch to look into the leg and add ATF bit by bit.

This process has worked really well on my bike.

Cheers,

Nic

I'm fixing my CBX550F at the moment, but I am having trouble with the piston sequence, at what side of the engine
do you start counting with the cylinders. Is the cylinder at the clutch side the first one, or the cylinder at the dynamo (alternator) side. Please help.
Thanks, Michel Heusinkveld

Well, the CBX is off the road for the moment. Paid work finally came my way (I'm a webmaster and JavaScript programmer for a local college), so with the poor old CBX deteriorating rapidly I decided to buy a new bike entirely and restore the Honda as time and cashflow allow.

ATM the bike's a non-runner. It's had starting problems for a few months now, but having stood for a while it's now pretty much impossible to start, although the engine makes a game attempt at firing. Symptoms point to the carbs, so a carb kit and full stripdown are first on the list. There's a blown fork seal, which I'll let a professional deal with (fiddly job) and the gaskets for the alternator and starter covers need replacing. The Incredible Invincible Motad exhaust is STILL in good shape, but the indicator brackets are all shot and make the bike look hideous. If anyone knows where to get hold of even one of these, you'd make me a happy man.

Lastly, the tank needs repair. Internally, all is well, but there's a nasty dent on the top, plus scratches caused by a worn-out tank bag. Hopefull these can be hidden with a bit of judicious cutting and polishing, but I may have to get a new tank from somewhere.

Nic: can't help you with the manual or the breather plug, but LRP is definitely the wrong fuel. Use unleaded instead.

‾R‾

P.S. the new bike's a Yamaha FZS600. I thoroughly recommend trying one sometime :)

Hi again,

Because of its age ('87), I just automatically put 4* LRP in the tank.

Reading through this list it seems this might not be the right fuel for the UK!

Any suggestinos...

Thanks again,

Hi all!

I just bought a CBX550F and got the Haynes manual with it. I'm a bit stuck on some parts...

Where is the crankcase breather plug??

If anyone knows where I can buy a Honda owners manual - or better yet - scanned one or .pdf on the in internet - I would be VERY grateful!

Thanks in advance,

Nic
