RE: Advice requested on AIRSUS forks for Honda CBX400C

Hi all,

I recently acquired an '89 CBX400C, love the bike, and it corners like a squirrel in comparison to most customs (well, in comparison to my old Suzuki GZ125 it does anyway.)

The basic problem is that there is a rattle out of the front forks when going over rough terrain. At first I thought it was the floating calipers banging off the brake disk, but I am fairly sure that there it is something internal to the front forks. I have tried pumping up the AIRSUSpension, but as the rattle occurs over very small travel on the front forks, this didn't really help. The fork seals were recently replaced.

I am not too sure if the CBX400F/F2 have a similar type of suspension.

Hi Oliver,
dont knock the board, stay regular and it will all fall into place! No pop-ups. No adverts. Quick to load. No membership...as per your link!! just perfect.

Anyway, more to the point, prices. Good F2s seem to go for about seven hundred to a thousand, from dealers. Spotted one recently for about eleven hundred.
Private, and it can vary depending on condition, runners from two hundred quid.

Keep an eye on e-bay, they do crop up from time to time.
MCN and the Classic Bike small ads also a good place to take a look.

If your F2 is in good nick, i would possibly try for seven/eight hundred and hope for six/seven.

good luck

rob

Hi.
So my worst thoughts has hapenned. I have set valves and enengine was working well but strange sound has stayed. I was so angry that i have gave max throtle and rpm clock has gone much more than red line is and .. ac generator has burn out. Strange sound was so loud ... i'm sure that bearing has died and now i can't ride. I have to go to the service and let them do the repair but it will be very expensive and i don't know if i could find necessary parts , cbx in poland is very rare motorcycle and finding any parts is very difficult. But now i will made my cbx to work like new one.

Does your cbx can go after 11.000 rpm , my has go far from it and the ac generator has died ?? Shouldn't there be something like a blockade or something ??

Now i will gave him new exhaust system and everything but it will take all of my savings for holidays ;( and after repair i will not be reach anought to ride ;( , but my motorcycle will be great.

Thanks Dave for your advise, i have cleaned all carbs , everything was good to me. I have turn everythings together, happy that now will be graet and ... no change ;(. I will check the valves tomorrow , maybe they need to be set. I found intake and exhaust valves should be set to 0,11 - 0,14 mm but i don't know , should i set it on cold or hot enengine?? Maybe you know the way how to do it , maybe some web sites witch could help me?? Dave you have sent me a manual scan when i tried to fix the clutch with clutch pictures , it was very helpful , could you sent me scan of cam chain (in english, italian version is like black magic to me ;)),PLEASE :) ??

From your desciption it sounds like there's something wrong with the carbs, but the strange noises are a mystery to me. I would suspect either the cold start jets are sticking on ,that's easy to check just look down the bank of carbs and operate the "choke" lever, or some passageways have blocked whilst the bike was stood over the winter. the air screws should be screwed out one and a half turns.
good look Dave
p.s. your english is a million times better than my polish!

Hi.
I'm Bartek from Poland , i'm ridering CBX 550 F2 1984 for one year or more. It was in good condition when i bought it but now something is going wrong with the enengine. I have made everything to prepera the motorcycle to new season after winter days. I have changed oil filter and oil , cleaned and synchronize ( synchronisation? - sorry for my english) carburetors , changed spark plugs , cleand air filter. I thought that everything will be great now , but... The enengine starts good when it's cold , only one move on the start button and motorcycle works , enengine is not making any noise , not inculding noise that cam chain makes - i know , i have to change it and i will. The chain noise silents after enengine worm up and some new noise is making , i don't know what is it. When enengine works on normal rpm (not touching throtle) the noise is rather not heareble but when i'm ridering with 4.000 rpm the sound is good hearable , much more heareble when the enengine is hot , in porticular when i give him big throtle from 3.000 - 7.000 rpm. When enengine is hot and i want to get him to red line on the rpmclock on the move the enengine wont do that. After 7.000 rpm it's getting to breaking work of some cylinders , i think. Also when i'm not ridering , and motorcycle is on neutral the enengine will wont(will not(?)) get to the red line , but only when it's hot. The enengine will not work on idle rpm , when it's hot. It's getting to fall from 2.000 rpm to 1.000 and after very short time it's dead. It looks like two of the cylinders went dead and then remain two. If i will give some throtle just beafore enengine dead it's getting very hard to go to 2.000 rpm but when it's after it , it works normal but making noises. Please help me with that problem.

Hi Chaps.
The bloody front brakes stared to seize again on me.
Grrrrrrrr
So I decided to strip them down, again, and replace the seals.

Seal kits are 20 quid plus, per calliper. Ouch
60 quid plus for the lot.
Bloody Ouch

So I decided just to get seals.
Honda part numbers are below, with my quoted prices inc vat.
Dust seals 45109MA7006 2.00 quid each
Brake seals 45209MA7006 2.53 quid each

That would mean over 27 quid just for bits of rubber.
Still Ouch.
(Dave Silver are cheaper, but the postage is a killer)
Upon strip down, I noticed that all the dust seals were missing.
Now I know my eyesight is not what is was, but surly I didn稚 miss them every time I cleaned them.
Errr, looks like I did.
She is not leaking any fluid, so I ordered 6 dust seals, and 2 brake seals.
They should be in this week, just after my appointment with the optician......

I used to use C.N. but they steadily increased there premiums ,I now use footman james. I actually pay fifty two ukp tpft and that includes recovery with a fifty ukp excess ! thats assuming the vehicals value is less than one thousand ukp.

hi Harry

I dont understand!! does this mean that provided you can cough up the money for registration you can use the motor, and when you sell it the new owner just has to get insurance?
If this is the case, how the hell do car/bike dealers sell new motors, i would assume that secondhand motors would be more desirable because the registration has been paid?
